Armed Attacker James Boyle Jailed for 16 Years After Assault on Police

James Boyle, 22, from Brixton, was slammed with a hefty 16-year prison sentence at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, 13 March. He had already admitted guilt last November to a string of serious crimes, including assaulting police, possessing deadly weapons, and using poison with intent.

Charged With Shocking Arsenal of Offences

  • Administering a poison or noxious substance with intent
  • Possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence
  • Using a firearm with intent
  • Assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm
  • Possession of a knife and an axe
  • Having a corrosive substance in a public place

Chaos on the Streets of Mitcham

The horror unfolded just after midnight on 17 June 2022 when officers were alerted to suspicious behaviour near parked cars on Commonside East, Mitcham.

PC Samuel Goard approached Boyle, asking him to remove his hands from his pockets. Things took a dark turn when Boyle sprayed ammonia directly into Goard’s face. Despite the intense pain and limited vision—he could see from only one eye—PC Goard fought back with PAVA spray, forcing Boyle to flee.

PC Goard said, “At the time of the incident I was in complete fear for my life. I did not know what the male had sprayed at me. Thoughts of acid, ammonia, or any liquid that could have caused me irreversible injuries to my eye, sight, or permanent disfigurement to my face overwhelmed me.”

“My thoughts turned to my son at home — was he going to grow up only knowing me as having a disfigured face? Would he even recognise me?”

Gun Threat and Armed Escape

Joined by PC George Garner, the officers gave chase on foot. During the pursuit, Boyle whipped out a handgun and pointed it at the officers—though thankfully he did not fire—before vanishing into the night.

PC Garner recalled, “When he pulled the gun on me, I felt powerless and had to let him run away. The recurring thought was if it’s so easy to point a gun at a police officer, what would he do to a member of the public?”

“I love my job and didn’t want this incident to make me fearful, but it’s a terrifying reminder any routine call could change lives forever.”

Swift Police Action Nets Dangerous Criminal

Detectives mounted a painstaking investigation, piecing together hours of CCTV footage to identify Boyle. He was arrested a week later, on 24 June 2022.

Officers found a knife, axe, and a bottle of ammonia in his rucksack. At his home, they recovered a grey tracksuit matching footage worn during the attack. Forensic tests confirmed the ammonia and live ammunition belonged to Boyle. The firearm he wielded had been fired before police arrived.

Detective Chief Inspector Speaks Out

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Woodsford said: “Boyle is an extremely dangerous offender. The overwhelming evidence left him no choice but to plead guilty. We have no doubt he would have caused more harm had we not acted swiftly.”

“My thoughts remain with the officers involved, who were lucky to escape lasting injury. Police put themselves in harm’s way daily, but no one should come home from work assaulted on duty.”

“Tackling violent crime, especially attacks on emergency workers, is our top priority. Abuse of our staff is never acceptable—we will always act robustly.”
