Teen Burglar Jailed for Terrifying OAPs in Their Homes

Michael Maughan, 18, from Enfield, has been slammed with eight years behind bars at Wood Green Crown Court. The teenager was convicted of two counts of aggravated burglary, aggravated vehicle taking, and possession of an offensive weapon — all in his absence.

Shocking Attacks on Vulnerable Elderly

The sickening crime spree targeted elderly victims in Haringey and Edmonton, leaving them shaken in their own homes. Detective Constable John McGranahan said:

“Maughan and his gang terrified their victims where they should feel safe. The violence was shocking, and the impact devastating. To prey on the vulnerable like this is utterly abhorrent. He stole not only their property but their peace of mind.”

Gruesome Details of the Burglary Spree

  • On 28 February 2020, two men armed with screwdrivers forced their way into an elderly couple’s home in Hermitage Road.
  • An 83-year-old woman was shoved aside as they demanded jewellery and tried ripping rings from her fingers.
  • The 79-year-old man’s chest was smeared with fabric conditioner, causing burning pain before they fled with a small haul of jewellery.
  • Later that day, the thugs smashed into the home of an 84-year-old woman on Wilbury Way, Edmonton.
  • Security footage showed her desperate attempts to flee, her screams chilling as she was cornered and threatened with a large screwdriver.
  • The crooks ransacked the house, stealing collectible coins before fleeing the scene.

Captured at Last—Justice Served

Police investigations linked the two burglaries through forensic evidence, including Maughan’s DNA found on a drinks bottle. A stolen vehicle used in the crimes was abandoned in Brighton and examined for fingerprints.

Maughan tried to dodge justice by going on the run, but officers tracked him down. He was arrested in Muswell Road, N6, and charged the next day.

“This lengthy sentence is well deserved,” said DC McGranahan. “But we’re not done yet. We need to find the rest of the gang. If you have any information, please come forward.”
