Police Sergeant Banned After Making Sexual Comments to Colleagues
Sergeant Neil Shipsey from the Central East Command Unit has been slammed for breaking professional standards. A misconduct hearing found him guilty of disrespect, improper use of authority, and discreditable conduct.
Sexualised Remarks in Police Vehicle
On 20 November 2021, Sgt Shipsey made unwanted, sexualised remarks to colleagues while they were travelling together in a police vehicle. The comments made those present uncomfortable and breached expected behaviour.
Senior Officer Speaks Out
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, overseeing policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, condemned Shipsey’s actions. He said:
“Sgt Shipsey’s behaviour was completely unacceptable. There is no excuse for these types of comments or making colleagues feel uncomfortable whilst on duty.”
He added, “Our officers must be accountable for their actions. It’s right that Sgt Shipsey faced a misconduct hearing and will no longer be allowed to work in policing.”
Barred from Police Service
The Directorate of Professional Standards launched a misconduct investigation in 2021. Following the hearing, Sgt Shipsey has been added to the College of Policing’s Barred List. This means he cannot be employed by any police force, local policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
