Speed Demon Nabbed at 147mph on Hampshire’s M3
A 62-year-old motorist has been slammed with a nine-month driving ban after being caught hammering down the M3 at a staggering 147mph. John Hornby was clocked speeding between junctions 7 and 6 near Basingstoke last June, putting countless lives at risk.
Police Nab Hornby Doing 147mph in Audi S4
PC Jamie Foster, driving an unmarked police car, spotted Hornby’s Audi S4 screaming along the northbound carriageway. The officer recorded an average speed of 147.1mph — one of the highest rates he’s ever seen on the job.
Judgment Day at Aldershot Magistrates Court
Hornby, who pleaded guilty, received his sentence in absentia. Besides the nine-month ban, he was fined £325 and hit with £117 in costs and victim surcharge. Prosecutor Paul Matcham described the offence as “amongst the highest speeds” he has prosecuted.
Officer Condemns Reckless Driving
“We see a lot of things in this job but even I was shocked to see someone driving at such high speeds. It is sheer luck that Hornby’s driving that day did not cause a collision, because if it had the consequences at that speed would have undoubtedly been fatal,” PC Foster said. “He was not only risking his own life but the lives of other innocent road users and that is unacceptable. There is absolutely no excuse for such reckless and totally irresponsible driving and we will take action against those who put lives at risk.”
