Cop Slapped with Final Warning for Sharing ‘Grossly Offensive’ WhatsApp Image
Sergeant Geraint Jones has been handed a final written warning after admitting to sending a “grossly offensive” image on WhatsApp. The disciplinary panel reached its verdict on Wednesday 18 August, ruling that Sgt Jones breached professional standards.
Panel Rules Officer’s Conduct ‘Below Expected Standards’
Chaired by an independent legal expert, the panel judged Sgt Jones’ actions as serious misconduct. Despite an earlier court ruling clearing him of a criminal offence under Section 127 of the Communications Act in April 2021, the force’s internal probe found fault.
Assistant Chief Constable Glen Mayhew condemned the behaviour, saying: “Devon & Cornwall Police expect all officers and staff to abide by high standards of ethical behaviour, both on and off duty.” He added the officer’s conduct “fell below those expected standards” and that Sgt Jones had accepted responsibility and apologised during the hearing.
Final Written Warning to Stay on File for Five Years
The panel decided that a final written warning was the appropriate punishment – it will remain on Sgt Jones’ record for five years. Mayhew confirmed all processes are complete and the officer will be supported as he returns to duty.
Force Tightens Social Media Rules After Incident
In response to the case, Devon & Cornwall Police have already acted on Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) recommendations, strengthening guidance on proper use of social media and private messaging by officers and staff.
