Cyclist Jumps Pavement and Smashes Into 78-Year-Old, Then Hurls Abuse
Gary Phillip Saunders, 61, from Southsea, was locked up for 28 months after a shocking pavement crash that left a pensioner injured.
Shocking Crash Outside Traffic Lights
On Sunday 14 March, Saunders rode his bike along Elm Grove pavement and collided with a 78-year-old man waiting at traffic lights. The victim was knocked into the road and broke his wrist in the fall.
Verbal Abuse Adds Insult to Injury
Despite the chaos, Saunders didn’t stop there. Witnesses told the court he shouted verbal abuse at the injured man lying in the road before cycling off.
Police Crack Down on Reckless Cyclist
Officers arrested Saunders shortly after and charged him with grievous bodily harm without intent.
“This was a reckless and avoidable incident caused by complete carelessness on Saunders’ part,” said DC Goddard. “The fact he targeted abuse at the victim after the traumatic event is completely unacceptable.”
The 28-month sentence sends a stark warning: assaults like this won’t be tolerated.
