More Thefts Add Up Over January
Smith didn’t stop there. He also pilfered alcohol, an iron, and an air fryer from the same Tesco store on 7, 16, and 20 January, respectively.
But Tesco wasn’t his only target. Smith, who has a long rap sheet for shoplifting, also stole food from Aldi and Farmfoods across Mansfield.
Mansfield Court Throws the Book at Repeat Offender
Smith, currently of no fixed address, faced Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. He pled guilty to six counts of shop theft and was promptly jailed for 36 weeks.
Police Clampdown Targets Persistent Shoplifters
Mansfield police are cracking down on shoplifting by focusing on the small gang of repeat offenders like Smith who commit the bulk of offences.
- Offenders are being closely monitored.
- Restrictive court orders ban them from key areas.
Inspector Kylie Davies, district commander for Mansfield, said: “Tackling shoplifting is a key local priority for us and we are working hard with our partners to reduce the impact on local businesses. People like Smith cause considerable damage to these businesses and we will hold them to account.”
