In the early hours of New Year’s Day, a woman woke up to a nightmare — Matthew Grant Wilkinson, known as Grant, was raping her.
The shocking attack took place in Leyland.
Rapist Caught and Charged
Wilkinson, 29, from Grasmere Grove, Whittle-le-Woods, was arrested later that morning. He was charged with rape and sexual assault by penetration.
Guilty Plea Leads to Jail
At a pre-trial hearing, Wilkinson pleaded guilty to raping a female over 16 and sexual assault by penetration.
On Friday, May 5, he was locked up for 58 months. He also received a restraining order and must sign the Sex Offenders Register.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery
DC 3553 Draycott, from the South Rape Investigation Team, said: “Wilkinson committed this offence knowing the victim was extremely vulnerable and unable to say no.”
“This crime has had a profound and ongoing impact on the victim. She is receiving support from an independent sexual violence advocate.”
“I would like to praise the victim for the tremendous bravery she has shown.”
“I would encourage anybody who has been the victim of a sexual offence to contact the Police who will provide specialist support.”
