Sex offender caught with hidden phone and console after skipping police check-in
Ex-child sex offender Jamie Gillett breaks strict release conditions
Jamie Gillett, previously convicted in 2018 for child sex offences, has landed back behind bars after flouting his strict release rules. The 25-year-old from St John’s Road, Gillingham, was banned from owning mobile phones, computers, and using the internet without notifying police—conditions designed to keep the public safe.
Missed check-in and secret gadgets spark fresh arrest
The trouble started when Gillett failed to show up at a police station on 13 May 2022 to sign his annual sex offender notification. Officers visited his home on 26 May and found more than they bargained for.
- A fully charged mobile phone was hidden behind a wardrobe
- A games console with internet access was seized
Both devices should have been declared to the police but weren’t. Worse, investigators discovered Gillett had accessed the internet through three different aliases on the games console—clearly breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Jail time handed down for multiple breaches
Charged with four counts of failure to comply with notification requirements and four counts of breaching his SHPO, Gillett pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court. On 22 November, he was sentenced to two years and two months behind bars. This sentence also covers two prior breaches in 2021.
“We regularly visit registered sex offenders living in our communities to monitor their conduct and ensure they are complying with any conditions that are in place to prevent them re-offending,” said Police Constable Marie Roostan from the Medway Offender Management Unit.
“Where any breaches are discovered, they will be arrested and brought back before the court to answer for their actions.”
This sentence sends a strong message: attempts to dodge restrictions and protect the vulnerable will not be tolerated.
