Thug Snatches Wallet from 78-Year-Old in Broad Daylight

John Ward, 41, targeted a vulnerable pensioner in Bilborough’s Bracebridge Drive after the man withdrew a large sum of cash from a cash machine. On the morning of May 31, 2022, Ward casually got out of a car and snatched the 78-year-old victim’s wallet right from his hands.

He then sped off in the same Vauxhall Corsa he arrived in, but his getaway was short-lived.

Quick-Thinking Public Leads Police to Criminal

A sharp-eyed member of the public noted down a partial number plate, which helped officers track the vehicle swiftly. The police stopped the car and arrested Ward along with two others inside. They found the stolen wallet in the vehicle.

CCTV footage from a distance captured the thief, dressed in clothing matching Ward’s, committing the robbery.

Robbery Culprit Jailed After Refusing to Talk

Ward, from Victoria Street in Ironville, initially refused to answer police questions but later pleaded guilty to robbery. On Thursday, Nottingham Crown Court sentenced him to two years and 11 months behind bars.

Detective Slams ‘Nasty and Cowardly’ Attack

“This was a nasty and cowardly attack on an elderly victim,” said Detective Constable Dionne Love of Nottinghamshire Police.

“Ward seized an opportunity to target a man he thought was an easy mark. The victim, already battling serious health issues, was deeply affected by the ordeal.”

“Ward showed zero concern for the man’s wellbeing and could have caused major harm. I’m pleased he’s finally been held to account.”

“A big thanks to the quick-thinking member of the public whose partial number plate report helped us identify and stop the suspect vehicle with Ward and the stolen wallet still inside.”

Justice has been served, and Ward is now behind bars for his brazen crime.
