Shock Organ Trafficking Plot Uncovered at Old Bailey
Ike Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice, 56, and Dr Obinna Obeta, 51, have been found guilty of a chilling conspiracy to traffic a man to the UK for organ harvesting. The sinister plan aimed to harvest the victim’s kidney to save their daughter Sonia, who suffers from severe kidney failure and requires regular dialysis.
Faking Family Ties to Cover Up Crime
The trio went to great lengths to fake a family link between the victim and Sonia Ekweremadu. This fake “cousin” story helped secure a temporary visa for the victim to enter the UK. Once here, he was coached to lie to doctors at The Royal Free Hospital to push through the illegal kidney transplant.
However, a keen consultant grew suspicious and halted the transplant just in time.
Authorities Praise Victim’s Courage
Joanne Jakymec, Chief Crown Prosecutor, slammed the defendants: “This was a horrific plot to exploit a vulnerable victim by trafficking him to the UK for the purpose of transplanting his kidney. They showed utter disregard for his welfare, health, and well-being.”
Detective Inspector Esther Richardson from the Met’s Modern Slavery and Exploitation Command added: “This is a landmark conviction. We commend the victim for his bravery in speaking out. Our team and partners worked tirelessly to bring these criminals to justice.”
Ongoing Fight Against Modern Slavery
The CPS vowed to keep working with law enforcement and authorities like the Human Tissue Authority to hunt down and prosecute those who exploit the vulnerable through modern slavery. Specialist officers will continue supporting victims and safeguarding their rights throughout investigations.
