Youth Arrested After Fatal Stabbing Near Mosque
A post-mortem revealed Richard died from a single stab wound. Police launched a major investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and conducting forensic checks. Footage showed 17-year-old Yaqeen Arshad, from Pitsmoor, chasing Richard near a mosque before fatally attacking him and fleeing the scene.
Family Pay Tribute to Lost Loved One
“Ricky was a much-loved son, brother and father,” the family said. “He faced many challenges but had three great loves: his young son, sport, and cooking delicious food. He was hardworking, a caring father, skilled sportsman, and talented chef.”
“His death was a senseless loss. Our young son will grow up without his dad, who he loved dearly. While justice has been served, it can never bring Ricky back.
“This tragic loss goes beyond our family. Another young life full of potential has been taken by knife crime on UK streets – a sad indictment of our society.”
Justice Served as Teen Sentenced to 14 Years
Arshad was found guilty of murder at Sheffield Crown Court on 15 March 2023. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison on 20 March.
Detective Inspector John Fitzgibbons, who led the investigation, said: “This tragic attack reminds us of the brutal reality of knife crime. One stab wound has destroyed a family’s future.”
He added: “Arshad refused to take responsibility, blaming the victim and lying throughout the trial. Our team worked tirelessly to bring justice for Richard.”
“Our thoughts remain with Richard’s devastated family who have endured a lengthy court process after Arshad pled not guilty,” DI Fitzgibbons concluded.
