Elderly Man Dies After Being Punched by Youth in Preston

Police were called just after 3pm on September 10, 2021, to The Paddock, Fulwood, Preston following a report of an assault. Officers found 86-year-old Frank Fishwick with facial injuries. He was taken to hospital but tragically died the next morning.

Assault Linked to Racial Language and Confrontation

A post-mortem revealed that Mr Fishwick died from bleeding caused by fractures to his nose, consistent with a violent assault. He had gone outside to speak to a group of youths gathered nearby. Mr Fishwick admitted using racist language towards the youths, later apologising for it. During the confrontation, he was punched in the face by one of the group, who then fled the scene.

19-Year-Old Admits Manslaughter, Sentenced to Four Years

Mohammed Al Aaraj, 19, of Sheffield Drive, Preston, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He pleaded guilty in December 2021. Today, Preston Crown Court sentenced him to four years in prison.

“Mohammed Al Aaraj’s rash actions claimed the life of an elderly man who was simply asking youths to move on,” said Det Ch Insp Mark Haworth-Oates.

“Mr Fishwick admitted his language was unacceptable and apologised, but by punching an 86-year-old who posed no physical threat, Al Aaraj altered both their lives forever. Actions have consequences.”

“We welcome today’s sentence and send our thoughts to Mr Fishwick’s family during this difficult time.”

Family Speaks Out on Tragic Loss

“The assault of an elderly, frail person is unconscionable. A life taken cannot be restored, and forgiveness for such violence cannot be given or offered,” said Mr Fishwick’s family.

“The untimely death of our father and grandfather has brought indescribable sadness. We thank the police investigation team and Family Liaison Officers for their support and dedication during this horrendous time.”

“Having worked closely with the police, we are grateful and impressed by their commitment to duty.”
