Nottingham Street Brawl Ends in Hospital and Court
Police scrambled to Canal Street, Nottingham, on 2 February 2023 after a violent scuffle erupted outside Nottingham College. A trio of youths clashed in a dramatic knife fight that left all three needing hospital treatment — and facing the law.
Blade Battle Caught on CCTV
The drama unfolded just before 11.30am when 18-year-old Ayomida Ajayi stepped out of Nottingham College. CCTV footage revealed he was met by two younger boys, aged 16 and 17, who had reportedly arranged to settle a dispute.
The 17-year-old suddenly brandished a large knife and lunged at Ajayi. Without hesitation, Ajayi pulled out a hefty machete. A furious 20-second fight erupted. The 16-year-old jumped in, kicking Ajayi before all three fled, injured.
Swift Arrests and Court Drama
- Ajayi was quickly picked out on CCTV and arrested at home. He suffered minor cuts to his arm and side.
- The younger pair were found at a nearby property. Paramedics treated the 16-year-old for a serious knife wound requiring surgery, while the 17-year-old had minor injuries.
- All were charged and hauled before the courts.
Sentences and Warnings From Police
On 31 March, Ajayi was handed a 10-month detention order, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to affray and possessing a bladed weapon. He must complete a 31-day thinking skills programme.
The 17-year-old admitted similar charges but awaits sentencing on 19 April. The 16-year-old pleaded guilty to affray and received a 12-month referral order.
Detective Constable Nicola Bidwell said: “This was a totally unacceptable incident. I’m glad these offenders have been held to account. Thankfully, no one was more seriously hurt. There’s no excuse for carrying weapons, and we will keep fighting those who do.”
Knife crime lead Superintendent Kathryn Craner added: “We work tirelessly with partners to reduce knife crime and educate young people about its consequences. The public’s role is vital — if you suspect someone is carrying a knife, report it. Your call could save a life.”
