Bridgend Horror: Logan Mwangi’s Tragic Death Linked to Shocking Abuse
The body of five-year-old Logan Mwangi was found dumped in the River Ogmore in Sarn, Bridgend, last July. The boy suffered a brutal 56 external injuries and severe internal damage before his death.
Mother’s Chilling Prison Claim
At Cardiff Crown Court, Logan’s mother Angharad Williamson, stepfather John Cole, and a 14-year-old boy all deny murder charges. But shocking testimony from a fellow inmate has raised eyebrows. Joanne Brooks, locked up alongside Williamson in Eastwood Park prison, revealed the 31-year-old introduced herself by saying:
“Have you heard of the Bridgend baby – the boy that was murdered and thrown in the river? Well, I’m his mother.”
Ms Brooks described Williamson’s manner as disturbingly casual, like she was chatting about shopping. When shown photos of Logan, Williamson showed “no emotion” whatsoever. Ms Brooks told the court:
“If you’re showing someone a picture of your child that has just died, you’d have emotion and there was none. It was a weird kind of attention-seeking. She was proud of the notoriety that came with being the Bridgend baby’s mum.”
Expert Evidence Reveals Brutality
Earlier, paediatrician Dr Deborah Stalker painted a grim picture of Logan’s injuries. She explained that his wounds were consistent with abuse and that if he had been taken to hospital in time, he would have had an 80% chance of survival.
Dr Stalker told the jury:
“Mortality rates for children with similar bowel and liver injuries are around 20%. If Logan had been promptly taken to hospital, he could have survived with effective and prompt treatment.”
The court heard that a rare, severe tear to Logan’s liver was far more common in abuse cases than accidents. The injury likely came from blunt force trauma – thumps, kicks, or stamps to the abdomen. The extent of bruising, especially a 6.5cm-wide mark around Logan’s left eye, was particularly troubling.
“It’s really quite extensive – the explanation given that a toy bounced off his eye is inadequate to explain the bruising,” Dr Salter said.
Disturbing Details Shock Jury
Details of Logan’s suffering were so distressing that court proceedings paused when a juror became visibly upset. Dr Stalker described how Logan had lost at least 20% of his blood causing “hemorrhagic shock.” His hands and feet turned “ice cold” and pale, clearly showing he was in a “dangerous situation.”
The doctor also explained the intense pain Logan must have endured, noting that similar injuries in children typically require morphine for relief. Bruising to both eyes was unusual and indicated severe trauma.
Charges and Court Battle
- Angharad Williamson, 31, denies murder and perverting the course of justice.
- Stepfather John Cole, 40, denies murder but admits perverting the course of justice.
- The 14-year-old boy denies both murder and perverting the course of justice.
The brutal death of Logan Mwangi has shocked the nation and now heads to a tense courtroom showdown as the truth behind this heartbreaking tragedy unfolds.
