Dangerous Driver Sentenced After Hospitalising Pensioner on Pedestrian Crossing
Driver Jailed for Hit-and-Run on Busy Warrington Road
Deborah Cubas De Souza, 27, from Platt Bridge, was slammed with an eight-month prison sentence at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, 5 May. She had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and no insurance.
81-Year-Old Pedestrian Left Seriously Injured
The shocking incident happened on 15 April 2023. De Souza was behind the wheel of a black Toyota Yaris along the A50 near Latchford, Warrington. At around 12.44pm, she struck an 81-year-old woman crossing the road on Knutsford Road.
The elderly victim suffered a severe head laceration and spent three weeks in hospital. She is still recovering from the traumatic injuries.
Police Warn Drivers: Road Rules Save Lives
Detective Constable Lisa Evans-Hill from the Serious and Complex Collision Investigation Unit issued a stark warning after De Souza’s sentencing:
“Driving is a privilege, not a right, and it comes with great responsibility to act within the rules laid down when you pass your test.
“In this case, De Souza clearly breached these rules and her driving was totally unacceptable, leaving her victim with injuries that could have been fatal.
“I hope that the sentence handed to De Souza will provide some closure to the victim and her family. I also hope it acts as a warning to others: the rules of the road are there for a reason and they apply to everyone. They protect you and pedestrians alike.”
Additional Penalties
Besides jail, De Souza was banned from driving for two years and four months. She cannot hit the road again until she passes an extended driving test.
