Seven-Year-Old Emily Jones Murdered in Shocking Park Attack
Eltiona Skana has been handed a life sentence with a minimum term of eight years at Minshull Street Crown Court today (Tuesday 8 December 2020). She pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility.
Sentenced under the Mental Health Act 2003, Skana is labelled a dangerous offender. She will need a full medical assessment before any chance of release.
Brutal Attack in Queen’s Park
On Sunday 22 March 2020, 7-year-old Emily Jones was scooting through Queen’s Park with her father, Mark. As Emily rode towards her jogging mother, Sarah, Skana suddenly leapt up from a bench and launched an unprovoked knife attack.
Skana grabbed Emily, attacked her with the knife, then threw her to the ground. Emily’s father raced to save her, while a member of the public courageously chased and detained Skana until police arrived.
Emily’s Tragic Death Sparks Nationwide Shock
Emily was rushed to hospital with a fatal neck injury but died despite desperate efforts by medical staff. The horrific attack left the nation in mourning.
Skana has been held in secure mental health facilities since the attack.
Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe said: “This was an absolutely devastating incident that has left Emily’s parents and family completely heartbroken. It sent shockwaves across the country as everyone mourned the loss of this innocent little girl.”
“Emily was taken from her family and friends in the worst possible way. No sentence can undo what happened on that awful day, but her spirit will live on in her family. She will never be forgotten.”
