Near-Tragedy in New Forest Shines Light on Elderly Driving Risks
On the evening of February 2, a 70-year-old Southampton man went for a drive through the New Forest. After several hours behind the wheel, disaster almost struck. While attempting a turn, he accidentally reversed down a boat launch and plunged into the water.
Luckily, nearby residents jumped to his rescue, pulling him from the river. He was rushed to hospital for treatment and later diagnosed with vascular dementia—a condition that can cause sudden confusion and impaired judgment.

This progressive illness often leaves sufferers appearing fine one moment and confused the next. It affects thousands each year and can seriously compromise driving safety. The driver has since surrendered his licence.
Sergeant Nick Tucker said, “We all get older, and our eyesight and some of our abilities deteriorate over time. We don’t always realise this is happening to us.”

Sergeant Hazlett adds, “Many older drivers have years of experience, but as we age, vision, hearing, and reaction times decline. Don’t wait for a near-miss or accident to reconsider your driving. Plan ahead and seek support early.”
