Teen Brutally Attacked in Middleton: Life-Altering Injury

On November 13, 2018, a 16-year-old boy from Middleton-by-Wirksworth was viciously assaulted, suffering a serious head injury. Now 17, he spent nine months in hospital and, although home, requires full-time care with a lifelong brain injury.

Attacker Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison

John Callis-Woolsey, also from Middleton-by-Wirksworth, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Today, Derby Crown Court handed him an eight-year jail sentence.

Kyle Cullan of Wirksworth pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and was sentenced to 12 months.

Detective Condemns ‘Extreme Violence’ Over ‘Trivial Matter’

“This was an act of extreme violence which was planned, orchestrated and carried out by a teenager for a somewhat trivial matter,” said Detective Constable Derek Ellis.

“His actions that night have dramatically altered the course of two young and bright promising lives, one of which was his own. The victim and his immediate family have had to come to terms with the consequences of that night. Their fight, spirit and support for each other has been nothing short of admirable.”

Shocking Weapon Inspired by TV and Video Games

The weapon used was eerily similar to one seen on the hit TV show The Walking Dead. After the attack, Callis-Woolsey was seen doing the ‘Floss’ dance from the videogame Fortnite.

The victim’s mother is raising concerns about the impact of violent TV shows and games on children:

“This was a mindless and unprovoked act of extreme violence. I was shocked when I saw the hideous looking weapon that was used.

“I would like the producers and creators of such programmes to know the influence the content has on immature minds. The assault has changed our lives forever. My son is serving a life sentence and doctors have advised that he will remain disabled for the rest of his life.”
