Driver Jailed Over Fatal Crash on Vintage Car Run
Michael Black, 52, from Crawley, West Sussex, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison after causing the death of 80-year-old vintage car driver Ronald Carey. Black was also banned from driving for 22 months following the tragic collision.
Fatal Crash Shatters Vintage Car Event
Ronald Carey and his wife Billi were taking part in the annual 1 to Brighton Veteran Car Run when the crash happened. Ronald died at the scene, while Billi, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered serious injuries.
Distracted Driving Blamed for Tragedy
Police analysis revealed Black was on a phone call at the time of the collision, highlighting the dangers of distracted driving.
“This tragic set of events has deeply affected the family,” said Temporary Detective Constable Kelly Newton from Surrey Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “Our thoughts remain with Mr Carey’s family. We hope this sentence helps them begin to come to terms with their loss and move forward.”
