Armed cops have swooped on Eastbourne tonight following a terrifying attempted armed robbery. A gang armed with baseball bats and a firearm tried to hold up the Best One store on Etchingham Road, sparking a dramatic, hours-long siege.

Baseball Bats and a Gun: Gang Terrorises Eastbourne Shop

Shortly after 8pm, witnesses reported a group of five men storming into flats above the shop, brandishing baseball bats and what appeared to be a handgun. The National Police Air Service helicopter from Redhill hovered overhead as armed officers sealed off the entire area.

Residents in nearby Hampshire Court were told to stay indoors and away from windows while police contained the situation. One unnamed local told us: “Police have everything under control but advised us to stay inside. The helicopter was buzzing overhead the entire time.”

Stand-Off Ends with Arrest After Intense Eastbourne Police Operation

Police surrounded the flats, and just before 10.10pm, armed officers moved in to arrest a 34-year-old man from a flat in Langney. A police dog searched the area, but no other suspects were found.

Sussex Police confirmed the suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear, and affray. The man has no fixed address and remained in custody overnight.

Community Thanks Police After Rapid, Calm Response

“I would like to thank everyone for their patience while we carried out our operation,” said Detective Superintendent Nick May. “While the sight of armed officers and helicopters may have alarmed residents, we treated the reports very seriously to keep everyone safe. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the incident ended swiftly.”

The police have assured locals the threat is over, and the area is now safe to move around. A marked police vehicle will guard the scene overnight before searches continue in the morning.
