A 42-year-old man from South Australia has been handed a hefty 23-year jail sentence for soliciting explicit content from 10 children overseas via social media. This historic conviction is the first in South Australia under mandatory minimum sentencing laws for Commonwealth child sexual abuse offences.
Snapchat Used to Groom Kids Aged 11 to 16
The man—whose name is sealed by court order—targeted kids aged between 11 and 16. He used Snapchat to push victims into sexual acts and send explicit images. The victims were located in the UK and Canada.
Cross-Border Police Team Nails the Offender
The probe started after West Mercia Police in the UK flagged a suspicious teen’s online chats. South Australia’s Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (SA JACET), combining federal and local cops, swooped. In October 2022, they raided the man’s Edwardstown home, uncovering a mobile phone packed with explicit communications and files with child abuse images.
Police Send a Warning to Predators Worldwide
AFP Sergeant Joe Barry said, “We cannot send a clearer message to offenders – if you engage in these abhorrent activities, you will be found and face the full force of the law.”
