Bath man locked up for 12 years after a frenzied knife attack on a woman he once dated has shocked the community. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and faces long-term trauma.

Frenzied Knife Attack in Southdown Lane

Matthew Jones, 29, from Ivy Avenue, Southdown, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on Friday 9 May. He pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent after stabbing Emma Kirk, 25, over 15 times in a brutal assault on 26 February 2024.

The attack happened in a quiet lane off Dransfield Way, where Jones ambushed Emma after she ended their brief university romance. When she refused to get back together and only wanted to be friends, Jones snapped. He demanded his gifts back and lured her to meet him, then launched the savage attack at 4:20pm.

Quick-thinking members of the public wrestled Jones to the ground before the police arrived — an intervention doctors say saved Emma’s life.

Life-Threatening Injuries and Hospital Fight

Emma was stabbed more than 15 times in the head, neck, abdomen, and hands, suffering two punctured lungs and deep nerve damage. Surgeons at Royal United Hospitals Bath revealed the knife missed a major artery by inches. She lost a significant amount of blood and was put into a medically induced coma. Emma couldn’t speak with police until 10 days later.

Jail Time and Judge’s Fury

Jones initially claimed self-defence but later admitted to serious harm, denying an attempt to kill. He was cleared of attempted murder but found guilty of GBH with intent. Judge Julian Lambert slammed the crime as “brutal and merciless”.

Jones was handed a 16-year extended sentence — 12 years behind bars plus four years on licence. He must serve at least two-thirds of that time before parole.

“This was an unpredictable and vicious assault. Despite attempts at rehabilitation, the risk you pose remains high,” said Judge Lambert.

Victim Speaks Out: “I Thought I Was Going to Die”

In a powerful victim statement, Emma revealed how the attack has destroyed her independence.

“I thought I was going to die,” she said. “I’ve had to move back home and rely on my parents for care.”

Her father John Kirk added:

“We watched bodycam footage of our daughter covered in blood. It’s something we’ll never forget. We’re forever thankful to the strangers who stepped in to save her.”

Shock Over Attempted Murder Acquittal Sparks Debate

The community is reeling from Jones’s clearing of attempted murder charges. Social media exploded with outrage, while locals praised the public’s heroic intervention. Bath’s community groups are demanding tougher knife crime laws amid rising fears.

Official stats show knife crime in England jumped 7% in 2024. Charities like the Ben Kinsella Trust and Refuge urge more education and early action on domestic abuse to curb violence.

Recovery and Calls for Change

Emma continues her long road to recovery with family and Victim Support by her side. This harrowing case shines a spotlight on the real-world toll of knife crime, pushing urgent calls for systemic reforms, stronger outreach, and greater community awareness.
