Sheffield Cops Nab Violent Rapist in Daring Roof Chase
Two Sheffield police officers have been hailed heroes after catching a violent rapist trying to escape his victim’s home earlier this year. PCs Harriet Murray and Toby Brown risked life and limb to snap up Thomas Andrew as he fled across the roofline, preventing further horror.
Brave Officers Act Fast on Emergency Call
On 26 January, PCs Murray and Brown were on duty when a tense call came through from a woman trapped in her Sheffield home at Hunter’s Bar. The 20-something victim’s phone line went dead after telling a loved one a man was inside.
The woman had been brutally raped and assaulted by 21-year-old Thomas Andrew. Acting instantly, PC Murray kept ringing the doorbell, shouting “Police!” The victim later said to the courts: “The doorbell persistently ringing is the only thing that stopped him.”
Roof Top Showdown Ends with Violent Arrest
Officers barged in, suspecting the attacker was still inside. PC Brown heard a whistle and knew the suspect hadn’t fled. Then PC Murray found him on the roof. Thomas Andrew fell as PC Brown gave chase, grappling the man to the ground despite being punched twice in the face.
“I just knew I needed to detain this man,” PC Brown said. PC Murray added: “He did such a good job holding on even after being assaulted.”
Andrew was found with stolen jewellery and was arrested on multiple charges, including four counts of rape, burglary, and assault of PC Brown. He pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.
Bravery Award and Praise for Sheffield’s Finest
At the South Yorkshire Police awards on 23 November, PCs Murray and Brown received the prestigious Bravery Award. Chief Superintendent Shelley Hemsley said: “The bravery showed by PCs Murray and Brown is commendable. They caught a serious offender instantly, protecting both victim and community.”
PC Murray told reporters: “I’m proud of how we worked together. We protected the victim and the public. This job has bonded us – I’m proud to call Toby my friend and colleague.”
Congratulations to these courageous cops for their fearless actions and well-deserved recognition.
