Man Stuck on Roof Sparks Full Police Lockdown on Isle of Wight
Emergency services launched a major operation today after a man climbed onto the roof of a house on Tennyson Road, Freshwater. The incident unfolded shortly before 12:10pm on Saturday, May 19th, halting traffic and alarming locals near the flower shop.
Full-Scale Police and Fire Response
Officers from both Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police quickly sealed off the area, blocking access at the front and rear of the property. Six police vehicles were on the scene alongside a fire appliance from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue stationed nearby. A technical adviser was also called in to assist with the delicate stand-off.
National Police Air Service (NPAS) scrapped in aerial support, deploying a Eurocopter from Bournemouth to help monitor the situation from above.
Man Refuses to Come Down, Armed Police Stand Guard
Local sources have identified the man as Matty Doyle, in his early 30s, believed to be the sole occupant of the property. Armed police established a containment zone at the rear, backed up by a dog and handler. A police officer was positioned in an aerial ladder platform raised above the house, trying to locate Doyle and coax him down.
Why Is He Up There? Court Order Sparks Standoff
It’s understood Doyle attempted to evade police after a warrant was issued for his failure to attend court. So far, no official reason for his rooftop protest has been released by Hampshire Police, who remain tight-lipped about what triggered the incident.
Road closures remain in place as negotiations continue. More details to follow.
