Crime Spree Hits Thanet Banks Over May Bank Holiday
Thanet and surrounding areas have been rattled by a string of burglaries over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Kent Police are investigating 11 break-ins and attempted break-ins, mostly happening overnight between Sunday 5 and Monday 6 May 2019.
Businesses and Homes Targeted, Safes Stolen
The burglary wave targeted mainly businesses, but residential properties also suffered. Some criminals made off with safes, adding to the haul.
List of Shocking Incidents
- Manston office break-in on Alland Grange Lane between 4am and 4.20am on 6 May: door damaged but nothing taken.
- Attempted burglary at a Manston caravan site around 2.30am on 6 May.
- Commercial premises on Margate Road, Broadstairs broken into at 2.50am – nothing stolen.
- Social club on Camden Road, Ramsgate: safe stolen around 4am on 6 May.
- Attempted break-in at commercial premises in Hengist Road, Birchington at 3.50am.
- Café on St Mildreds Road, Westgate-on-Sea targeted at 3.30am.
- Safe stolen from industrial unit in Pysons Road, Broadstairs at 2.30am.
- Shed raid at Betteshanger Country Park, Sandwich Road, Sholden – safe and GPS devices stolen overnight.
- Container broken into on Chestfield Road, Whitstable between 3-4 May: confectionery taken.
- Cash stolen after window smashed at Grove Ferry Boat Club, Canterbury overnight 5-6 May.
- Wildwood gift shop in Herne Bay burgled overnight, items still being confirmed stolen.
Police Appeal for Help as Investigation Continues
Kent Police believe the incidents are linked. Officers urge residents and business owners to check CCTV for any suspicious activity.
“It is very unusual to have this many burglaries in one night, especially across such a wide area,” said Sgt Steve Moat from Thanet Community Safety Unit. “Someone will know who is responsible. We thank those who’ve already come forward and urge any victims who haven’t reported yet to call 101 with details.”
