Quick-Thinking Locals Nab Burglar in Gateshead
Arnold Rickerby, 47, has been locked up at Newcastle Crown Court for breaking into a Gateshead home and stealing coats stuffed with receipts, train tickets, and even a child’s passport.
Burglar Busted After Brazen Theft
On June 2, Rickerby smashed into a house before making off with the stolen goods. But thanks to sharp-eyed residents, the crook didn’t get far. Neighbours alerted the victim, who confronted Rickerby as he walked away — only to be met with a cheeky finger shake.
Not one to give up, the victim chased him down and called the cops. Nearby security guards then stepped in, catching Rickerby rifling through the coats on the ground and holding him until police arrived.
Career Offender Finally Behind Bars
Rickerby, from Chevington, Gateshead, admitted burglary and even shrugged it off as “a laugh and a chase” during police questioning. With over 100 arrests and five previous burglary convictions, this time the courts showed no mercy. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail on July 3.
Police Praise Victim and Security Staff
“We are pleased to see that Rickerby is now behind bars for his despicable actions,” said Detective Constable Stuart Taylor of Northumbria Police’s High Impact Team. “The victim was brave in pursuing him and alerting police. Thanks also to the security staff who detained him before officers arrived.”
“We hope this sentence sends a clear message that prolific offenders will face justice,” he added. “We urge the public and businesses to stay vigilant, lock up securely, and report suspicious activity.”
