Tory Lanez Jailed for 10 Years Over Megan Thee Stallion Shooting
Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has been handed a hefty 10-year prison sentence. This comes over seven months after he was convicted of shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in the feet following a Hollywood Hills pool party in July 2020.
Felonies and Court Drama
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford announced the verdict on Tuesday. Lanez, 31, was found guilty of three serious crimes: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possessing a loaded unregistered gun in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
Judge Herriford struggled to square the ruthless act with Lanez’s previously “benevolent and kind” image. He told the court, “Sometimes good people do bad things. Actions have consequences.” He added there were no winners in the case.
Megan Thee Stallion’s Harrowing Testimony
Megan recounted how Tory fired the gun at her feet and forced her to dance away from the SUV after leaving Kylie Jenner’s pool party that summer night. The shooting required Megan to undergo surgery to remove bullet fragments.
“Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace. Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same,” the victim’s powerful statement was read out by prosecutors.
Shockwaves Across Hip-Hop and Justice Circles
The case has sparked fierce debate in the hip-hop world about the treatment of Black victims by law enforcement, gender issues in rap, online abuse, and the specific misogyny Black women face – known as misogynoir.
Just before sentencing, Lanez begged for leniency. He said, “If I could turn back the series of events that night and change them, I would. The victim was my friend. I take full responsibility.”
He received roughly 10 months credit for time served since his December conviction.
Reactions and Aftermath
Lanez’s lawyer Jose Baez hit out outside court, saying, “We’re extremely disappointed. I’ve seen vehicular homicide cases with death where defendants get less than 10 years.”
Megan didn’t attend the sentencing hearing, saying she couldn’t face Lanez in person. Her statement slammed him for mocking her trauma: “This is for all survivors — your lives matter. There is zero tolerance for the torture that comes with violence.”
