Care Home Workers Jailed for Decades-Old Child Abuse

Two former children’s home workers have been locked up for sexually abusing three boys under 13 during the 1970s. Bernard Collins, 73, and Patrick Grant, 69, were found guilty after a seven-week trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Long-Delayed Justice for Horrific Crimes

Bernard Collins, from Sutton, was convicted of five counts of indecent assault and sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday, 23 April. Patrick Grant, from Cardiff, was found guilty of ten counts and handed an eight-year sentence on Thursday, 11 April.

The pair preyed on vulnerable children in care homes across Lambeth, Kingston, and Cardiff. The chilling abuse took place between 1976 and 1989 at Fircroft Children’s Home, Rowan House, Shirley Oaks, and Walker House.

Operation Trinity Uncovers Decades of Abuse

The investigation began in 2014 when a victim bravely came forward, prompting detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command to launch Operation Trinity. Further victims emerged, revealing the horrific scale of the abuse inflicted while under the men’s care.

Detective Sergeant Paul Pringle said: “Grant and Collins abused their positions of trust within the care homes and exploited the trust placed upon them. The victims have carried the trauma and lasting effects of the abuse for decades.”

“They have shown great courage in coming forward. I hope today’s conviction brings some measure of closure.”

“Anyone who has experienced child sexual abuse is urged to contact police. Specially trained officers are available to support you.”

The Victims’ Courage Brings Closure

The men’s conviction marks a victory in the fight against historic child abuse. Despite the passage of more than 40 years, justice has finally caught up with these predators.

The victims, now adults, endured appalling trauma but refused to stay silent. Their bravery has paved the way for truth and accountability.
