Pensioner Jailed for Rape Committed 30 Years Ago
David Jarman Locked Up for 9½ Years
David Jarman, 76, from Littlehampton, has been slapped with a nine and a half year prison sentence for raping a teenager in Chatham between 1989 and 1992.
The shocking crime only came to light in March 2017, when the victim bravely reported it to Kent Police. Despite Jarman’s not guilty plea, a jury found him guilty at Maidstone Crown Court on 22 October 2019.
Lifetime Sexual Offender Registration
Jarman will now be listed on the Sexual Offenders Register for life. Detective Constable Karen Caulfield, the lead investigator, commented on the challenges of cracking such cold cases.
“Incidences of non-recent sexual abuse often come down to one person’s word against another’s and potential witnesses move on, memories may fade, and forensic opportunity is rare. We will always investigate allegations of sexual abuse thoroughly and proportionately, whether the alleged crimes took place recently or historically.”
Justice for the Victim
DC Caulfield added: “Jarman’s despicable behaviour would have had long term emotional and physical effects on the victim. It took a tremendous amount of courage for them to come forward, I am pleased that we have secured justice for them.”
