Greenwich Cracks Down on Blue Badge Fraud with Four Fines
The Royal Borough of Greenwich is cracking the whip on Blue Badge misuse after prosecuting four offenders in July and August. The fraudulent use of these badges, which help disabled people with parking, carries fines up to £1,000 and is treated as a criminal offence.
Four Caught and Fined for Blue Badge Scams
July 31 saw two admissions of guilt for using Blue Badges belonging to deceased relatives:
- Ronnie Lee Slack, a Global Accounts Manager from Woolwich Road, Greenwich, used a badge from a relative who died six months earlier. He was slapped with a £415 fine, a £166 victim surcharge, and fined £878 in costs.
- James McDermott of Ripon Road, Plumstead, pleaded guilty to the same offence for a badge used on September 25, 2023. He faced a £120 fine, £48 victim surcharge, and £940.25 prosecution costs.
Two more cases were heard on August 14:
- Fatema Begum from Dalston was fined £220 plus an £88 victim surcharge and £85 costs after her vehicle was caught displaying a stolen Blue Badge, and she refused to name the driver.
- Vandon Nguyen of Holburne Road, Blackheath, admitted using a stolen badge he found near work. He received a £167 fine, a £67 victim surcharge, and £85 prosecution costs.
Council Issues Warning to Would-Be Frauds
The council reminded Greenwich residents that Blue Badge fraud is a serious crime. “Blue Badges are vital for genuine users, and misuse damages a system set up to aid disabled people’s independence,” a spokes-person said.
Greenwich is ramping up efforts to stamp out abuse and will continue to hold offenders accountable.
