Two Shoplifters Nabbed and Locked Up in Bold Crime Crackdown
In a harsh crackdown on retail crime, two notorious thieves from Swale and Medway have been sentenced to immediate jail terms—sending a clear message to criminals across the region.
Harris’ Shopping Spree Ends Behind Bars
William Harris, 54, went on a stealing spree across Sheerness High Street, targeting shops between December 20, 2023, and March 7, 2024. His haul? Over £370 worth of food and sweets from well-known outlets including Iceland, the Co-op, a local newsagent, and a clothing store.
Thanks to sharp-eyed officers and extensive CCTV footage, Harris was caught red-handed on March 12, carrying a knife. He was charged with six counts of theft plus possession of a knife in a public place.
O’Brien’s Booze and DIY Heist Net £500+ in Stolen Goods
Meanwhile, Lewis O’Brien, 33, hit shops in Queenborough, Gillingham, and Greenhithe between March 6 and March 12. He made off with spirits and DIY items worth more than £500 from big names like B&M Stores, Tesco, B&Q, and Asda.
Medway Community Safety Unit officers tracked him down in Chatham’s High Street using CCTV footage. O’Brien was slapped with six counts of theft.
Swift Justice at Medway Magistrates’ Court
Both men pleaded guilty at Medway Magistrates’ Court on March 13. Harris was handed 20 weeks behind bars. O’Brien got four months inside. They were also ordered to pay back their victims.
Chief Inspector Di Middlemiss, District Commander for Swale, said: “We are deadly serious about targeting persistent criminals who treat paying for goods as optional. CCTV evidence and relentless law enforcement mean offenders will be caught and locked up fast.”
