Man Breaks Police Officer’s Finger in Struggle Over Cannabis Search

Akaash Panday, 26, from Point West, UB4, has admitted breaking a police officer’s finger during a dramatic arrest in December 2019.

12-Month Community Order and Curfew for Panday

Westminster Magistrates’ Court handed down a 12-month community order with a strict three-week curfew from 10pm to 6am. Panday has also been ordered to pay £100 compensation to the injured officer.

Fight Erupts During Cannabis Search on Rupert Street

On 18 December 2019, officers spotted Panday smoking cannabis on Rupert Street, W1, and stopped him. He was detained under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act for a search.

Panday refused to cooperate, repeatedly putting his hands in his pockets despite warnings. When officers tried to restrain him, he fought back, resulting in a fierce struggle.

The confrontation escalated until officers finally pinned Panday to the ground and handcuffed him. During the tussle, a 32-year-old male officer from Chiswick police station suffered a broken finger.

Cannabis Found After Arrest, Apology Issued

  • After the arrest, officers found a grinder with cannabis on Panday.
  • A small plastic canister containing cannabis resin fell out after Panday tried to kick it away.
  • Panday was arrested again for possession but no further action was taken.
  • During questioning, Panday apologised for his aggressive behaviour.

Detective Constable Nigel Pacquette said: “Panday obstructed officers going about their lawful duty at every opportunity. Not only did Panday obstruct officers, he was physically aggressive toward officers resulting in Panday breaking an officer’s finger. This is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
