Dangerous driver who fled after killing motorist gets jail time boosted
Repeat offender’s sentence hiked to 11 years
John Frazer Yates, 28, a man with no fixed address, has landed a hefty prison term of 11 years and three months after the Court of Appeal slammed his original sentence as far too soft.
Yates had originally been handed eight years and three months behind bars at Chester Crown Court in January 2023 for causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a sample. Alongside that, he was slapped with a 12-and-a-half-year driving ban.
Appeal court steps in
The case was flagged for an “unduly lenient” sentence — and rightly so. On Thursday 20 April, judges stepped up the punishment to ensure justice was served.
Justice for victims
The 123 and I organisation welcomed the court’s tougher stance. They called it “the right decision” in a deeply tragic incident where Yates fled the scene after causing a fatal crash.
Yates’ case sends a strong message: dangerous driving with deadly consequences won’t be let off lightly.
