Derbyshire rocked as Darren Hall handed life for ex’s murder
Derbyshire is reeling after Darren Hall, 36, was locked up for life with a minimum of 17 years for murdering his ex-partner, Sarah Henshaw, 31. The chilling verdict came at Derby Crown Court following a tense two-week trial that ended with Hall’s conviction last Friday.
Argument turns deadly in Ilkeston
The court heard that on June 20, Hall and Sarah had a bitter row at her Ilkeston home. Things turned sinister when Hall attacked and killed her. Six days later, Sarah’s body was dumped in woodland near a motorway layby by Chesterfield—about 20 miles from her home.
Prosecutors revealed Hall “almost certainly strangled” Sarah to death, likely using a dressing gown cord.
Attempts to cover up a brutal crime
The prosecution, led by Michelle Heeley KC, outlined how Hall still had a key to Sarah’s house. On the day of the murder, despite Sarah asking him to leave, Hall refused. Neighbours heard a loud bang from the property, sparking the nightmare.
In a cold attempt to hide his crime, Hall sent texts from Sarah’s phone to friends, faking she was alive. He also discarded her belongings, including her phone, dressing gown, and slippers.
Claims shattered by police evidence
Hall admitted dumping Sarah’s body but claimed it was an accident after she fell down stairs during their fight. Police found no forensic proof of a fall or injuries matching his story. Mr Justice Goss said Hall had been violent before and showed no real remorse.
Family’s heartbreak & judge’s scathing words
Via video link from HMP Nottingham, a trembling Hall faced the court. Emotional family tributes poured in, remembering Sarah as caring, bubbly, and full of life.
Her sister Kelsie blasted Hall as a “cruel, selfish man,” while her mother Lorraine branded him a “monster” who treated Sarah’s body “like a piece of rubbish.”
Mr Justice Goss described Sarah as a “loud, outgoing, fun-loving” woman with an infectious laugh — a life cruelly cut short.
