A 19-year-old motorcyclist from Eastbourne is now battling life-changing injuries after a shocking collision caused by careless driving on the A259 at Hooe.
Sudden Turn Sparks Devastating Crash
On November 29, 2023, at around 8:30 a.m., Stuart Hutchinson, 40, behind the wheel of a white Nissan Qashqai, made a split-second decision that changed a young rider’s life forever. Eye-witness dashcam footage shown in Hastings Magistrates’ Court revealed Hutchinson’s dangerous swerve to dodge traffic near the Custom Café.
His sudden turn cut right into the motorcyclist’s path, leaving the rider with no time to react and smashing him in a horrific collision.

“The image of the white car turning in front of me, leaving me helpless, haunts me every night,” the 19-year-old injured biker told the court.
He suffered multiple serious injuries, including broken legs, arms, shoulder blades, spinal damage, and a ruined Achilles tendon. The rider is now dealing with ongoing physical pain and deep emotional trauma.
“It feels like I am reliving the moment when I believed I was about to die,” he added.
Police Warn: “Carelessness on Our Roads Has Deadly Consequences”
PC Lewis Jordan of the Roads Policing Unit warned the incident shows just how dangerous one careless move can be. “This case demonstrates the devastating consequences of a moment of carelessness,” he said.
“All drivers must take care and think of vulnerable road users, especially when turning or changing lanes. When it comes to cycles and motorcycles, always think bike.”
The court heard Hutchinson refused to say if such a turn would be allowed in a driving test, highlighting the recklessness behind his actions—an attempt to save just minutes amid traffic chaos.
Driving Ban and Community Order for Hutchinson
At a hearing on November 20, Hutchinson pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving. Magistrates hit him with a 15-month driving ban and handed down a community order requiring rehabilitation.
The former chef from Brinklehurst Drive, Bexhill, remained silent throughout the proceedings, offering no public comment.
