Man Arrested Over Series of Shocking Sexual Assaults on Young Girls
A 24-year-old man was arrested last Friday, January 28, on suspicion of sexual assault. He’s been bailed to return in early March as police continue their investigation.
The local Safer Transport team has ramped up patrols to reassure the community and hunt for more clues.
Four Attacks Shake SE28 Area
- December 16, 2021: A 13-year-old girl was followed off a Route 229 bus near Crossway and Hoverton Road. A man sexually assaulted her before running off when she screamed.
- January 12: A 16-year-old was walking down Poplar Place when a man asking for directions pushed her against a fence and sexually touched her. She escaped after screaming.
- January 13: A 17-year-old got off the Route 422 bus at Artillery Place and was followed into a nearby property. The attacker grabbed her leg, causing her to fall, then sexually touched her before fleeing when she cried for help.
- January 18: Another 16-year-old on Kentlea Road was approached by a man asking for directions. He sexually touched her when she tried to walk away, but she managed to escape.
Police Believe Attacks Are Linked
Officers suspect these horrifying assaults are connected and urgently want anyone with info to come forward.
Detective Inspector John Millward, leading the probe, said: “Our investigation is progressing but we continue to urge the public to stay vigilant. You’ll see extra officers patrolling open spaces.”
