Shopwatch Scheme Returns to Boost Christmas Security in Gedling
Christmas shoppers in Gedling can breathe a little easier this season as the popular Shopwatch scheme makes a comeback. Thanks to national Safer Streets funding bagged by Nottinghamshire’s Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, extra security measures are being rolled out just in time for the holiday rush.
Crackdown on Crime at Retail Parks
The Gedling Operation Reacher team is working overtime this December at local retail parks to tackle retail theft and vehicle crime. High-visibility patrols are now a common sight, supported by new Safer Streets wardens employed by Gedling Borough Council. These uniformed officers will patrol the retail and Colwick Industrial Parks, providing a reassuring presence for shoppers and workers alike.
“My Reacher team is already out there targeting those intent on causing misery for shoppers, businesses, and residents,” said Inspector Mark Stanley, District Commander for Gedling. “The return of Shopwatch and the new wardens give the public an extra security net knowing someone is always there to help.”
Stanley praised the strong partnerships behind the initiative. “These schemes wouldn’t be possible without our partners, and the Safer Streets funding has helped us add more CCTV and ANPR cameras, plus offer free security devices like doorbell cameras and locks to burglary victims.”
£3 Million Safer Streets Cash Transforms Netherfield and Colwick
The £3 million funding pot secured by Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry is delivering a major safety boost for Netherfield and Colwick. It includes new street lighting, enhanced CCTV, and car park upgrades designed to cut crime and build public confidence.
“While these measures start just in time for the busiest shopping period, they will be funded until late 2023 to create lasting security improvements,” said Henry. “This package goes beyond extra patrols and wardens – it’s a complete plan to protect communities well into the future.”
Local Leaders Praise Security Drive
Gedling Borough Council leader Coun John Clarke MBE welcomed the investment. “Keeping our streets safer and cutting crime is a top priority. We’ve seen how effective Shopwatch has been in Arnold, and increased patrols alongside new wardens will help reduce recent antisocial behaviour — especially at Victoria Retail Park and Colwick Industrial Estate where car cruisers have been a problem.”
Clarke added: “I thank the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and our Neighbourhood Wardens for working together on this vital scheme. Retailers will be glad to see this extra security as they recover from pandemic impacts.”
