Government Launches Funded Childcare for 9-Month-Olds
London, May 12, 2024 – The UK Government has kicked off applications for government-funded childcare for parents of 9-month-olds. Led by Education Secretary The Rt Hon Laura Trott MBE MP, alongside Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, this move marks a huge boost in childcare support across England.
Who’s Eligible and What’s on Offer?
From today, eligible working parents with children turning 9 months old by August 31 can claim 15 hours of free childcare a week. This expansion aims to help hundreds of thousands of families juggling jobs and childcare.
The scheme covers children aged 9 to 23 months by August 31, 2024. Parents can apply online to receive a childcare code, which they then give to their preferred childcare provider to claim the government funding.
Big Plans to Save Families Thousands
This rollout is the second stage of the government’s childcare revolution after successfully funding over 210,000 places for 2-year-olds earlier this year. By September 2025, funding is set to increase to 30 hours weekly, potentially saving families an average of £6,900 a year on childcare bills.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “No parent should have to choose between their career ambitions and looking after their children. We’re delivering unprecedented childcare support to make sure families get the help they deserve.”
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan added: “We’re committed to quality, accessible childcare for all eligible parents. The initial phase has been a huge success, with every local authority meeting demand.”
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Laura Trott said: “This investment is about supporting parents so they don’t have to compromise on work or care.”
How to Apply and Get Help
Parents need to reconfirm their eligibility every three months to keep their childcare funding. HMRC will provide guidance to make the application process smooth. If any problems arise securing a place, parents are urged to contact local childcare providers or their council directly.
The government’s childcare expansion is a clear sign of its dedication to building a family-friendly environment while boosting the UK economy.
