Driver Charged After Child Killed in Hit-and-Run on Folkestone Seafront
A man has been charged following the tragic death of seven-year-old William Brown, who was fatally struck by a vehicle on the A259 Sandgate Esplanade in Folkestone on 6 December 2023.
Hit-and-Run Horror
The collision involved two vehicles: a grey Peugeot van and a red Citroen car. Eyewitnesses say the Peugeot van fled the scene before emergency services arrived. Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene, but William Brown was sadly declared dead at the spot.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
The day after the crash, a man was arrested. On 11 May 2024, Stewart Powell, 49, from St Mary’s Bay, was formally charged with failing to stop following a collision. He also faces charges for driving without proper insurance, as it’s alleged the vehicle was driven outside the terms of its insurance policy.
Powell has been bailed to appear at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on 24 May while investigations continue.
