Brighton Stands Firm on Ukraine Invasion Anniversary
Brighton and Hove came together on Sunday, February 23, 2025, to mark three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The city held a solemn memorial hosted by Stand for Ukraine Brighton and Hove, drawing local leaders, Ukrainian nationals, and community members in a moving show of solidarity.
Emotional Memorial at Brighton Unitarian Church
The tribute began at 4 p.m. at the historic Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road. The Mayor, Mohammed Asaduzzaman, led the heartfelt service filled with powerful speeches honouring the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the devastating human cost of the conflict. Attendees observed a profound moment of silence for those lost in the war.
Music played a key role, as stirring Ukrainian folk songs and classical pieces filled the church, moving the crowd deeply.
Candlelight Vigil at War Memorial
At 5:30 p.m., the memorial shifted to the Brighton War Memorial where a candle-lighting ceremony took place near the Post-1945 Casualties Stone. The flickering flames symbolised both the ongoing suffering caused by the conflict and the community’s hope for peace and justice.
Brighton’s Aid Efforts Continue Strong
Beyond remembrance, the event raised vital funds for Ukrainian civilians caught in the war. Stand for Ukraine Brighton and Hove has been active on the ground, funding ambulances and minibuses to evacuate people from frontline zones. Recently, a fully equipped van was sent directly to Ukraine, highlighting Brighton’s unwavering commitment.
This local tribute was part of a wider wave of solidarity across East Sussex and beyond. With overwhelming turnout and personal tributes, Brighton reaffirmed its role as a staunch supporter of Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.
“We left united and determined, more resolved than ever to stand with Ukraine—today and always.”
As the day closed, Brighton’s heartfelt remembrance sent a powerful message: a city defying aggression, calling for continued support, and hoping for peace and resilience in Ukraine’s future.
