Driver Crashes Just Hours After Surgery, Banned from Roads
High on Anaesthetic, Hits Another Car
A Southampton motorist crashed into another vehicle just hours after undergoing surgery with a general anaesthetic. Tomasz Zielonka, 32, was caught driving while still under the influence of drugs linked to his operation. The smash happened at 7pm on May 17 on Bassett Avenue. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Ignored Medical Advice, Insisted on Driving
Zielonka had been discharged from hospital at 4:45pm the same day. Medics warned him not to drive, but he ignored the advice. After a night out with his girlfriend, the pair argued over who should drive. Zielonka insisted on taking the wheel – a decision that led to the crash. In a police interview, he admitted feeling dizzy and numb in his feet as he drove.
Found Guilty, Faces Heavy Penalties
Zielonka claimed he hadn’t read the aftercare leaflets and was unaware he shouldn’t drive. Tests confirmed anaesthetic drugs were still in his system. He pleaded not guilty but was convicted at Southampton Magistrates Court. The court hit him with a 12-month driving ban, a £554 fine, £620 in court costs, and a £55 victim surcharge.
Police Warn: ‘Don’t Risk Driving After Surgery’
Sgt Rebecca Hodge said:
“This was an unnecessary collision and extremely lucky no one was injured. We remind everyone to follow medical advice after procedures. Driving too soon can put yourself and others at risk and may invalidate your insurance. Driving while impaired isn’t just about illegal drugs – prescribed or legal medication can also stop you being fit to drive.”
Stay safe and don’t gamble with the road after surgery!
