Driver Avoids Jail After Deadly New Forest Crash
A reckless driver has dodged prison after causing a fatal collision with a cyclist in the New Forest.
Speeding Driver Kills Cyclist in Horror Smash
Frankie Katciotis, 18, of Greatwood Close, admitted causing the death of 61-year-old cyclist Steven Jones by careless driving.
The tragic crash happened on August 12 on Hilltop road, near Beaulieu, when Katciotis’ Seat Ibiza slammed into the back of Mr Jones, who was cycling ahead.
Blinded by Sun, Ignored Speed Limit
Southampton Crown Court heard Katciotis repeatedly sped over the 40mph limit during a time when the low sun seriously affected his visibility.
Police investigations confirmed the driver failed to spot the cyclist in time, leading to the fatal collision.
Suspended Sentence and Driving Ban
Katciotis was handed a six-month jail term, suspended for two years, slapped with 240 hours of community service, and banned from driving for two years.
PC Kelly Hargreaves from the Joint Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This could have been avoided if Katciotis had driven responsibly and adjusted his speed to the conditions. He ignored the speed limit and the glaring sun, which affected his view. Drivers must slow down when conditions demand it. Now a family mourns a pointless death.”
