Dangerous Driver Rams Pedestrian in Brighton and Flees Scene
A reckless driver ran red lights and crashed into a pedestrian in Brighton before fleeing the scene. Abdul Shabir, 27, ignored police warnings and caused chaos on the roads.
Shabir’s Wild Ride Ends in Arrest
- Shabir was first stopped by PCSOs for illegal parking on Western Road but refused to provide details.
- The officers smelled cannabis in his VW Golf, but Shabir sped off westbound, turning into Montpelier Road.
- He blew through a red light at 1:30pm on December 4, 2021, hitting a 45-year-old pedestrian from Littlehampton.
- The pedestrian was thrown over the car’s bonnet, suffered injuries, and was taken to hospital.
- Despite a smashed windscreen, Shabir drove on the wrong side of the road trying to escape.
- He attempted to flee down Temple Gardens but was blocked by officers.
- Shabir ran back on foot, dumping a carrier bag of drugs in a bin, witnessed by police.
Justice Served: One Year Prison and Driving Ban
Police pursued and detained Shabir on Montpelier Road. The unemployed Portslade man was charged with dangerous driving and possession of a class B drug. He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court in July.
On October 6, Lewes Crown Court sentenced Shabir to one year in prison. He received a 2½ year driving ban and was ordered to pay £100 compensation plus a £156 surcharge.
Victim and Police Respond to Shocking Incident
“At first I thought the driver was a stupid person and must have ruined his life. But now I just feel angry at him. The whole incident was over very quickly, I did not even see the car coming. In hospital they were amazed that I was up and walking,” said the pedestrian.
“The PCSOs obtained detailed accounts from the victim and quickly relayed information. An officer then caught up with Shabir and made the arrest. He tried to discard cannabis, but the drugs were seized and linked to him via DNA. Shabir was reckless and showed no regard for other road users. It is shocking that despite hitting a pedestrian, he tried to flee police. This case shows we are determined to catch offenders and get justice for victims,” said Crime Investigator Lisa Moffat.
