East End Legend Dave Courtney Found Dead Aged 64
Dave Courtney, the notorious gangster-turned-actor linked to infamous East End criminals like the Krays and Lenny McLean, has died aged 64. The hardman was found dead at his Plumstead home in south-east London, having reportedly taken his own life.
From Bermondsey Boys to Knuckle-Duster Enforcer
Born in Bermondsey, Courtney’s early years were steeped in the gritty London underworld. Known as a debt collector with a vicious reputation, he survived shootings, stabbings, and even had his nose nearly bitten off—an injury he shockingly said was “sewn back on.”
Despite a long rap sheet, Courtney was acquitted in 19 separate trials. Yet in 2009, he received an 18-month conditional discharge after being caught with live ammo at Bristol Crown Court.
From Violent Past to Cult Movie Icon
Courtney was said to be the real-life inspiration for Vinnie Jones’ Big Chris in the cult hit Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. His life was riddled with headlines, including accusations of attacking his wife in 2004.
He also revealed he was a police informant under the alias ‘Tommy Mack,’ claiming it was to protect a corrupt detective friend—not to be a “grass.” His criminal exploits landed him inside Belmarsh prison.
Celebrity Gangster Turns Actor and Author
In later years, Courtney reinvented himself as a media personality, starring in and directing gangster flicks like Hell To Pay, Six Bend Trapp, and The Dead Sleep Easy. He published six books and even recorded a cheeky version of ‘I Fought The Law’ with Scottish punk band Mute.
Known for his larger-than-life ego, Courtney dubbed himself “Dave Courtney OBE” – meaning “One Big Ego” – and famously had a knight painted on his south London home.
Tributes Flood In As Police Probe Unexpected Death
News of his death sparked a wave of social media tributes, with fans remembering him as a tough but generous figure with a “heart of pure gold.” His last posts showed him enjoying a day out at Charlton Athletic with friends and promoting a candle company, alive with his trademark bravado.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are investigating the unexpected death. No arrests have been made, and his family have been informed.
Dave Courtney’s life was a rollercoaster of crime, celebrity, and controversy. His infamous legacy will remain firmly etched in London’s East End folklore.
