Van Crash Chaos on Portsmouth’s Eastern Road
Police are hunting for witnesses after a dramatic smash on Eastern Road, Portsmouth, just after midday today.
Van Loses Control, Causes Multi-Car Pile-Up
A van is said to have collided with a BMW heading north out of town. The impact sent the van careering into two lanes of oncoming traffic. It smashed into two more cars before slamming into a Skoda pushed across the central reservation.
The van then flipped onto its side, trapping its two occupants inside.
Heroic Rescue Amid Chaos
I was driving into Portsmouth with my wife and two children when suddenly I saw a van hurtling towards us. I slammed on the brakes, stopped, and got my family out,” said one eyewitness.
“I ran to the van and found a terrified little girl screaming. Her father was trapped too. I pulled the child out first, then helped free her dad. Dust from the van’s building materials was everywhere – the child must have been frightened sick.”
Injuries Reported But No Life-Threatening Harm
Paramedics treated two victims from the van, while firefighters checked out others from the involved vehicles. Thankfully, no one suffered serious injuries.
- The man was taken to hospital with an arm injury.
- The child was taken in for observation.
- Both are expected to make a full recovery.
Road clearance teams removed wreckage and debris, allowing police to reopen Eastern Road at 3.20pm.
