Officer Sacked for Reckless Taser Use on Fellow Cop
A police officer has been found guilty of gross misconduct after firing a Taser at a colleague inside police premises. PC Christopher Philpott discharged the Conducted Energy Device on the leg of another officer on 16 March, with no members of the public present.
Misconduct Hearing Ends in Dismissal
At an accelerated misconduct hearing chaired by Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington on 6 November, Philpott was slammed for breaching professional standards on Use of Force and Discreditable Conduct.
The Stansted Airport-based officer was promptly dismissed and placed on the College of Policing’s Police Barred List, banning him from future service.
Chief Constable Condemns ‘Reckless’ Actions
“While PC Philpott had an exemplary record, there is no excuse for such reckless use of force,” said Chief Constable Harrington.
“A Taser is a serious tool, trusted to be used only in dangerous situations. Officers must uphold the highest responsibility when using them. Philpott’s conduct risks eroding public trust in the police.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through the force, highlighting the critical importance of proper Taser use and safeguarding community confidence.
