Family Speak Out After Pensioner Brutally Killed by Mental Health Patient London – April 7, 2025
The family of 87-year-old Bernard Fowler have broken their silence following the sentencing of the man who savagely murdered him. The pensioner was attacked without warning during a routine morning walk in Harold Wood.
Terrifying Attack on Beloved Grandfather
Bernard Fowler, a cherished father and grandfather from Hamilton Drive, Harold Wood, was on his usual early stroll to Harold Wood train station to fetch newspapers for neighbours when tragedy struck.
He crossed paths with 23-year-old Sekai Miles, a paranoid schizophrenic from Brent Cross Gardens, Hendon, recently released from a community treatment order. In a shocking frenzied assault, Miles gouged Bernard’s eyes and brutally beat him with his own walking stick.
Family Heartbroken and Seeking Privacy
“No sentence can ever bring our beloved Bernard back. Bernard was a kind, loving grandfather, father and friend to everyone fortunate enough to have known him. He brought warmth and joy to so many lives and his absence leaves a void that can never be filled. He will be deeply missed by all. As a family, we respectfully ask for privacy as we begin to heal from this truly harrowing ordeal.”
The family also paid tribute to Family Liaison Officer Jess Nye for her unwavering support throughout the investigation:
“Her guidance and support during this unimaginable time have been invaluable, and we are forever grateful. She is a true asset to the British Transport Police.
Police Condemn Brutal Attack
Detective Chief Inspector Sam Painter of British Transport Police described the assault as “horrific and unprovoked” and expressed sympathy for Bernard’s loved ones.
“This was horrific and unprovoked violence which claimed the life of a much-loved and respected father and grandfather. I know no result can possibly make up for the pain and devastation that the loss of Bernard has brought, but I hope that the outcome will help them find comfort.”
Calls for Mental Health System Overhaul
The tragic killing has sparked fresh concerns over the community treatment order system, with critics demanding stricter monitoring for discharged mental health patients. Campaigners warn better safeguards are urgently needed to prevent similar incidents.
Community Mourns a Local Hero
Neighbours described Bernard as a “kind soul” who constantly looked out for others. One local said:
“Bernard was always so cheerful, even in his old age. He was a gentleman who would do anything for his community. It’s heartbreaking that his life ended in such a violent way.”
Family Seeks Closure Amid Ongoing Grief
As the community reels from this shock, Bernard’s family ask for privacy to mourn while urging authorities to improve mental health care and aftercare monitoring. Their hope is that justice for Bernard will bring some measure of peace and spark change to stop such tragedies happening again.
