Burglar Busted After Nine Break-Ins and Violent Rampage in Gravesend
John Steadman, 27, is accused of smashing his way into nine homes across Thong Lane, Lower Higham Road, and Old Road East on the morning of Wednesday 11 August 2021. The alleged spree included a heated showdown with a homeowner while Steadman was armed with a plank of wood.
Car Crash and Arson Add to Crime Spree
Steadman reportedly used a Ford Fiesta to travel between burglary sites. The getaway car didn’t get far—it crashed into wheelie bins on Old Road East and was shortly set on fire.
High-Tech Police Hunt Ends in Arrest
Police launched a major search of Gravesend with help from the National Police Air Service. Steadman was tracked down and arrested on Donald Biggs Drive.
More Charges Follow Custody Chaos
While in custody, Steadman is said to have attacked a kent-police/" title="Kent Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="8099">Kent Police PCSO and wrecked a police van. He now faces serious charges including:
- Five counts of burglary
- Four counts of attempted burglary
- Arson
- Assaulting an emergency services worker
- Possession of an offensive weapon
- Criminal damage
- Driving without licence or insurance
The Maple Road resident appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on 13 August. He has been remanded in custody and is due back at Maidstone Crown Court on 10 September.
