Fatal New Year Fire Linked to Faulty E-Bike Battery

A New Year’s Day tragedy rocked South Bermondsey when a flat fire, sparked by a failed converted e-bike battery, blocked an escape route and claimed the life of 21-year-old Sofia Duarte.

Firefighters warn this incident is part of a worrying trend, with e-bike and e-scooter fires up 60% this year. The London Fire Brigade has launched its urgent #ChargeSafe campaign to keep Londoners safe from battery fire risks.

Mother’s Heartbreaking Plea After Daughter’s Death

Maria Frasquilho Macarro, Sofia’s mother, made a heartfelt appeal for caution. “Sofia loved life, she loved to party, and she enjoyed her job behind the bar at a nightclub,” Maria said. “All I have now are my daughter’s ashes.”

“I want her death to mean something. If raising awareness about e-bikes and lithium batteries can save even one life, it will bring me comfort,” she added. “It feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from.”

Sofia’s tragic death happened in her Old Kent Road flat where an exploding lithium battery from a converted e-bike caused the deadly fire. Fire investigators pointed to non-regulated, cheaply bought batteries as a major risk factor despite no sign of poor installation.

Rising Danger: London’s E-Bike and E-Scooter Fires Surge

This year, the London Fire Brigade has been called to an e-bike or e-scooter fire every two days on average — a shocking 60% rise compared to last year. In 2022 alone, crews dealt with 116 such fires.

Deputy Commissioner Dom Ellis urged Londoners to be vigilant: “The rise in e-bike and e-scooter use brings greater fire risks. Through #ChargeSafe, we want everyone to be aware of the dangers and protect themselves and their families.”

#ChargeSafe Campaign: Essential Safety Tips

  • Never block fire escape routes with e-bikes or e-scooters.
  • Store vehicles away from main thoroughfares, ideally in garages or sheds.
  • Only use batteries and chargers that meet UK safety standards.
  • Watch for warning signs like overheating or battery deformity.
  • Purchase e-bikes and batteries from reputable, certified sellers.
  • Allow batteries to cool before charging; never charge unattended or overnight.
  • Unplug chargers immediately after use and follow all manufacturer instructions.
  • Install smoke alarms in charging and storage areas, testing them regularly.

Why Lithium Batteries Are Risky

Lithium batteries pack huge energy into tiny spaces, making them a fire hazard if damaged or overheated. Faulty, crushed, or overcharged cells can catch fire or explode, turning everyday e-bikes and scooters into ticking time bombs.

Choose Safety: Buy Legit, Stay Safe

Deputy Commissioner Ellis stressed: “Only buy complete e-bikes or scooters from trusted retailers. Conversion kits or cheap online batteries increase your fire risk dramatically.”

Special clearance was given to discuss this case during ongoing court proceedings, highlighting the grave need to raise awareness and prevent future tragedies.
